UK Councils Handed Powers to Fine Motorists

All councils in England and Wales will soon be handed powers to fine motorists up to £70 for traffic offences as new road enforcement powers come in to place from December 2021, the Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed. London and Cardiff already have powers to enforce moving traffic offences, a responsibility normally carried out by the police using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Driving Penalty Points and Fines

In the United Kingdom (and many other countries), driving penalty points and fines are added to your driving licence when you break the law on public roads. The number of points added to a motorist’s driving licence once they’re convicted depends on the severity of the traffic offense committed, if you accumulate too many penalty points you’re highly likely to be banned from driving altogether for a set period of time (as ruled in a court of law).
